Description
Social workers in medical settings are often called on to function in response to unique circumstances, such as life-threatening disease, the consequences of an accident, death, and dying. Even in maternity wards, characterized by joyful responses to childbirth, social workers are often preoccupied with stressful reactions by some mothers and might be aware of wider effects of such reactions on other family members and of the long-term consequences of this crucial event. The birth of twins is perceived simultaneously as a double blessing and a stressful event. Given that raising a child is always a challenge, raising twins can be expected to require even greater energy and effort over an extended period of time. Indeed, the overall level of parental stress has been found to be higher among mothers of twins than of singletons (Feldman, Eidelman, & Rothenberg, 2004). However, though the effect of the birth of twins has attracted considerable empirical interest (for example, Boivin et al., 2005; Robin, Le Maner-Idrissi, & Corroyer, 1998; Thorpe, Golding, MacGillivray, & Greenwood, 1991), the important aspect of marital relationship has received little attention. Attention to the early stages of the postnatal period may prevent subsequent costs, including psychological distress and deteriorating spousal relations. An understanding of marital adaptation in normative transitional circumstances (the birth of a child) could therefore help social workers to sharpen their sensitivity and improve their professional intervention strategies.
